Your Rats?

Why dont you tell us a little bit about your rats, such as names, colours and markings (if you dont know thats ok, just try and explain a bit), their ages if you know and maybe any funny or interesting thing that they might do.

That way we can all get to know a little bit more about each others rats.

My first girl is an almost mink self called Bubbles. She has a small triangle between her back legs, so she'd be better described as a mink mm berkshire. She's 12 months old.
She's the most active of my 3, always sticking her nose where it doesn't belong!

Squeak is a cinnamon hooded, she is Bubbles sis. She's always making trouble for herself, she squeaks for attention when she wants help, hence her name.

Mash is my pregnant cinnamon berkshire. She'd much prefer to sleep in her cage then come out to explore, but it may be just her pregnancy that's doing it. She's friendly for patting though. She's roughly the same age as the other 2.

I've gone form owning 10 rats down to just 7 in the past few months.

I'll start with my 2 wonderful girlies-
GRACE is a Silverfawn hooded who has a head tilt. It has improved after being on medication, but she will have it for the rest of her life. It's very endearing & she manages it very well. She is the most active of all my rats, and very friendly but not into cuddles- there's too much stuff to do!! She is 13 months old today

BESSIE is a cinnamon berkshire, mismarked. She's a funny little girl, very flighty and not into being held. But let her come to you and she is very snuggly. As long as you don't try and cuddle her! She has the softest & plushest fur. She is around 11 months old.

My boys
LINDSAY is my oldest, he will be 3 in early November. He is also my largest, he has lost alot of weight in his old age but still has a large head and body in general. He is still quite healthy and very happy. He is the unspoken Alpha in the boy's cage. A true alpha in that he is very gentle and peaceful, but the others just respect him for it. He is a very special boy. He is a dove barkeback.

B. Rattus Jim is a Buff berkshire who was a rescue. I brought him home all the way from Mildura to Melbourne on a train & bus, he is very well travelled. However, as he got older, he decided he wanted to be a bully so now he lives on his own (with lots of human contact) and supervised playtimes with the other boys. He will be 2 in January. He is very human oriented and just a funny boy in general. He ais also very nicely built, more like a doe than a buck in that he is very muscular rather than squishy.

DODGE is a black berkshire boy I picked up from a pet shop because he was unwell (bad, I know). He had mites but with treatment they cleared up and now he is a big cuddly squishy.

FOX is a little Topaz self with THE softest coat I have ever felt on a male. He can be a bit bossy but he's a good boy nontheless, Lindsay puts him in his place. He loves to lick and sit on my shoulders, racing from one to the other.

Cookie is my sickly little man. My mum brought him home for me from a petshop, he was supposedly 2 weeks older than Fox was at the time, but he was small. He is also oddly-shaped & has some respiratory problems. But he is happy and quite active, and he will be much loved and cared for as long as he lives, no matter how long that is. He is very sweet and friendly and loves causeing havoc with his best mate, Fox. Cookie and Fox are approx 8 months old (if my maths is right lol).

Mash gave birth to 9 bubs this afternoon. Squeak's being a great 2nd mum, Bubbles stole a baby, so while Mash was looking for her stolen bub a baby must've crawled out from under Squeak or it might just have been weaker then the rest.
The 8 are doing well, all have milk bands and are bright pink, squirmy and noisy jellybeans!

I once had a female who had never given birth but she used to steal the other mothers babies and try to mother them.

My rats are as follows from oldest to youngest... including Rattery prefix, name, colour/marking/coat, Date of Birth.

I love some of the names you have for your rats Kim.



I like how you and teenypaws both have a rat named Cookie, only yours is female and teenypaws is male.

I always find it interesting as to why people name their rats what they do, especially if other people also have rats with that same name.

We just recently lost our Cookie. He got his name because he was the only one from his litter who wasn't spoken for, so I called him "That's the way the Cookie Crumbles"

We're down to around 40 rats including all the bubs we're keeping from our recent litters. One day I'll get to writing out all their names! Around half of them now are over 18 months old though, so i'd be forever updating the list.

I wish I could have that many rats but I think my mum and dad would kill me.

I had a rat named Honey once, she got her name because she started eating my honey sandwhich while I was thinking of a name.

I've got 2 hooded girls, their names are Coco & Cadbury (for now, thinking of changing them). As I type they're taking a nap on the back of my neck, a spot that's become a favourite of late. They love lying there grinding their teeth which from what I read is a sign they're enjoying themselves!

They're about 10 weeks old I think, didn't really ask when we got them from the pet store. Coco's the alpha, so she's quite the bully and tends to pounce on her innocent sister more often nowadays as they're growing older. She's slightly darker and rounder than Cadbury, loves having toast with marmalade for breakfast and is the more cautious rat of the 2.

Cadbury has a weird marking on her back.. where Coco's is sort of a disjointed line, Cadbury's forms sort of a hook shape or I like to see it as an upside-down question mark cause she always looks like she's asking me "What's up?" when I fiddle around in their cage while Coco usually just ignores me and goes back to sleep. She's the hoarder, infamously hoarding their dinner so I'd think they've finished and want to add more.

Well I have Jack, just Jack unfortunately. He is an agouti standard, 16 mths old.

He did have a great mate Scotty, who died about 6mths ago. He's been on his own pretty much ever since. I hate the thought of him being on his own. I tried him with another baby, but Jack bullied him badly. I can't get a female as I'm not keen to get him de-sexed, he'll most likely fight with an older male and I really don't want to get another 2 rats and have 3 in total.

2 rats was a perfect number as I have a bit of work cleaning up after them. Jack freeranges all the time basically. He visits his cage to eat and that's about it. He doesn't even drink water out of his bottle anymore, but waits til I'm in the kitchen and then insists on drinking out of the tap. He lives in my bookcase and at the back of my sofa! He'll come out for a hand wrestle or a scratch whenever I'm watching tv, so we get a bit of time together each day. He can lick me for minutes on end sometimes. Scotty used to take himself off upstairs and climb into bed with me! I used to get woken up at 6am regularly as he tromped across my doona and nestled into my neck. I had to break him of that habit though, as I was so afraid of squashing him in my sleep. Jack is much more content to keep to the downstairs which is probably a good thing.

I have 3 cinnamon hooded 6 week old boys too. There are a few guys I'd rather keep...

Newbie do you like the boys more than girls or has it just turned out that you have more boys?

I like the boys because they cant get pregnant

I wouldnt mind having a few more boys but at the moment I'm traveling around Australia with my 3 old rats and dont think its wise to get any new rats right now.

I do prefer my boys, but I take in almost (except when I'm over capacity) any rat that needs a home, I didn't choose it.
I like the guys because they're big and they sit still for cuddles usually.

I have a boy rat named chip

He is a black hooded rat that I got from a pet shop.

I also have a boy rat named silly

He is a brown hooded rat and I got him at the same time as chip and I think they are brothers.

My mum said I could get them for my birthday last year. So they are nearly a year old now.

I like chip because he likes cuddles and will sit on my shoulder while I watching tv. He likes potato chips which is how he got his name.

Silly got his name because he stepped in his baby food when I first got him and made footprints all over his cage. My dad said he was a silly little bugger. So he got the name silly.
