I have Duke on my shoulder, he's been picking fights... Bear, Porthos, Athos and Quinn live on my comp desk pretty much because there's nowhere else for them. I have 20 boys in a cat display cage, 9 in a cage that should have 6 maximum, and the 3 girls, Mystar and 3 bubbly girls and the breeding cage has the little boys in it. WAY over capacity here...I'm going to fix the other cat show cage, shift the boys in there and get the girls into the rabbit cage. If you want to help and take some guys off my hands (don't worry, they don't bite - hard!!), if they have names, they're staying! The blue boy's been reserved by someone else.

Hi, My name is Angie, and my son Lachlan bought his first rat on Saturday. Her name is Amy, and she is the most beautiful little girl. I have fallen for her in a big way. She is so cute. She is white with a beige hood and stripe. I don't now what type of rat she is, or the right colors. We got her from a pet shop, and they said that she is very young. She is about the size of a mouse at the moment. She picks the corn out of her food bowl, and stashes it in her house. She has dog food in there too. Very cute. We love to watch her. She's not scared of us, only if we pick her up. She lets us pat her. We have a Maltese dog, called Muggie. Amy doesn't mind him that much either, except when he get excited and barks. We are trying to let them to get to know each other (through the cage). Muggie is getting better. Hopefully he will be bored of her soon. This is a picture of our baby girl, Amy.

Hi Guys, Can anybody tell me, what kind of rat our Amy is please. Her pic is on the post before this one. She is white and beige/fawn. I think you would call her a hooded rat. Yes her saddle does go to her tail. I think she is about 5 or 6 weeks old. We are not sure. What color do you think she will turn out to be, when she is older? She has grown heaps in the last few days, and she is storing her food, in her house. She has carrots and chicken bones in there now. She is ripping up the expensive carpet in her cage, (news paper) and storing that too. She has everything in there. She has taken of the roof of her house! I suppose this is normal. I am just hoping she is not pregnant. At the pet shop, all the rats were together. They are only very young, but you never know. Thank you Angie

I did have two gorgeous, fat and squishy boys Andy - Agouti hooded. loved his food and loved going for a ride on your shoulder. Very friendly, and craved attention. loved to give kisses Peanut - Argente hooded. loved climbing up your leg to get to your shoulder. quite inquisitive and loved to play with his brother, Andy, and race around for hours. Sadly both passed away 2 months ago from a bad respiratory infection

Nathan - Not really. They tell me their names when they're ready.
Amy is an absolutely gorgeous cinnamon hooded, but don't take me word for it. I'm ok with the markings, but pretty awful at colors. 2 of the baby boys were cinnamon, they're now cinnamon agouti.

My boys We have: Ink: Black mm Bareback - so called because he has a black 'ink' blot on his rump He is a greedy sod - always scouting around for food, and one of my largest rats Blot: Dove mm Bareback - so called because he has a grey ink 'blot' on his rump He was one of my quieter boys, but has come roaring out of his shell and I would classify as the 3rd most dominant in his cage. Trouble: Mink hooded - he named himself basically When I picked him up, I said 'this one is going to be trouble'. Always the first out of the cage wanting food - he is unsurprisingly one of my largest rats Brie: Dove hooded - Quite petite in size compared to Trouble, Ink and Blot, he is more of an explorer. If I leave the cage door open long enough, he always finds his way out onto the roof. In his younger days, he wasn't that keen on cream cheese - but has lately come around and eagerly takes his dollop (And named after the cheese - I just thought it was a cool sounding name ) Yoyo: Argente berkshire - so named because when he was younger, he would bounce around the cage, full of beans. These days though, he is often found fast asleep in the hammock. One of my smaller boys, when he isn't asleep, his partner in crime is Brie, and will often join him on the roof of the cage exploring. Sooty: Black berkshire - named after the tv show Sooty and Sweep. Very big/very fat. Loves food and has a big white belly for kissing. One of the lead ringers in the 'great bread excavation' of 2007.' In a nutshell, him and his sidekick made a new home inside of a bread loaf, leaving a trail of bread crumbs everywhere. Sweep: Silverfawn hooded - I have a Sooty, just needed a Sweep In desparate need of glasses, he will often poke his head out of the hammock/igloo/breadloaf and start swaying like a drunkard sailor . Chief sidekick in the 'great bread excavation' of 2007. I think thats all for now Zoe

I have two males, one named Pop (full name Handerkerchief Pop as when we first bought him he would sneeze terribly much - but don't worry, we brought him back to health after being in that shop!), aka Poppet, Poppy, Popiscal, Pop-pumpkin, Little one, etc. He is dove-cloured with the 'hooded' markings, and lovely little black eyes. Around 7 months old. The other younger male (about 3 months old) is named Tama (it beans 'ball' japanese; I speak japanese and well, he was a gorgeous little ball of fluff when first christened!), aka Tummy, Tum-tum, Tiny one, etc. He is mink-coloured (and a little ticked with cinnamon) with 'berkshire/cardigan' markings (he'll never stay still enough for me to look properly), and black eyes also. When their free-range time comes to it's sad end, they are usually both called with the name 'Poppy-Tama'. Tama absolutely adores used tissues, while Pop just loves chewing everything wooden to bits (literally)! Pop is more sleepy than Tama (due to age I think) and much more tolerant of tummy kisses and scritches (he closes his eyes and enjoys). Tiny Tama is slightly hyper and paranoid... my partner and I are not sure exactly why, whether there is actually something physically wrong with him, or whether he was handled badly (or not enough) in the shop before we bought him, we are unsure. But don't worry! He is already much better than the first few days, and we are hoping he will recover fully, though that's not to say he can't be a little shy in his temperament! Tama is terribly fond of food, and gets a thrill out of dragging an entire piece of toast across the floor (my breakfast, and about twice his size). Pop is far more interested in exploring, whenever I enter the room with their cage (and they are running around outside of their cage) Pop bolts to meet me, stands on his hind legs and either jumps up my pants and climbs vertically to my shoulder, or tries to sneak out past me into the rest of the house (I live with others who are not so fond of rats as I!). When everyone else is out, I usually take him on my shoulder with me as I walk around the house doing chores, etc. Pop also enjoys books and lips. That is, chewing/nibbling them. When he was a few months younger, he would hoard like a maniac! There was under the couch, beneath the pillow on the chair, in between the bookshelf, etc... Now it seems that Tama has taken over his job. Tama can sometimes be a little over-confident when following pop. As he is not quite as big, he attempts jumps that really are just ridiculous. Pop loves grass and daily walks in the garden, while Tama loves play fighting. Oops but I think I've gone on too long! Well, in short, I love my little ones to pieces, and I think they are quite fond of me too. xoxo little raton (french for little 'baby rat')

Oh dear, I feel terribly guilty! I almost forget about my female rat in England! Her name is Oskar (the pet shop owner told us she was a male, and we named her before even checkig - whoops, too late to change we thought!). She is a black-coloured with hooded markings and is very sweet. At first she was very anti-social, having not been handled really at all (it was a bad pet store, my partner and I bought her to save her - she was the last rat and, well, they sold snakes there too), and would, in the beginning, bite our fingers a fair bit. Not too long after however, she became very friendly and showed her utterly gorgeous and loving side. She adores cornflakes and loves running up and down beds.

This is Joshie with his owner my 6yo. Both look a little bedraggled as Noah had been having a bit of a cry cuddling him before I took the pic. I really don't know anything on the colours and marking thing. I thinkl he's a hooded? He's 2 1/2 years old now. He's just a big snuggle boy. We have cats but after they've had their paws nipped a couple of times they leave him alone although I swear he deliberately hangs his tail out to tease them. Naturally cats are kicked out when he's out of his cage.

Hey Abby Joshie looks like a Mink Hooded to me. Sometimes its hard to tell from a picture though, but he looks dark grey to me in that pic, which is what a Mink is. You can check out the Australian Rat Standards -copyrighted- area in the Colour or Marking sections you can learn about colours and markings.
