I sold some rats to a Dave is Sydney in 2005. One was called Bridget and one was called Fiona. You wouldnt be that Dave would you The only reason I asked if you breed was that I am always looking for people who breed as sometimes you need to bring new rat lines into your rattery so you can out cross your lines so you have new genetic blood lines.

Yeah I'm so glad I wasnt mistaking you for someone else. Most of the time i have a good memory when it comes to rat people, but every now and again I think I've talked to someone who turns out I never did. But I love being able to catch up with people I've met before and then lost contact with.

Same. I hate losing contact with people, so it's always good when you are able to make a reconnection.

Thanks Kim, I'm in contact with Carawatha, but the Sunshine Coast is actually about an hour and a half further north than Brisbane. I don't know of any ratterys up here around Maroochydore. I'm sure Snow is quite young, she is the same size as my other female who is only 10weeks old. She was alone in a cage on a shelf away from the other rats for sale, and the assistant said someone just left her. (The assistant also thought she was male. duh...) I'm guessing she got pregnant by a sibling. I'm new to forums: should I start a topic?

Yes go ahead and start some topics if you have some that are not already here. All new members are very welcome to start up topics, in fact we like to encourage it We just ask that members look through the topics to see if there is already something similar. There are 3 pages worth of topics in the New Members Lounge alone. If members look at the top and the bottom of the thread list, you will see its says ... Page 1 of 3 >> Jump to page [ ] Go This is where you can choose a different page to see older posts. On page 2 we have topics that havent been posted in since December and February. I probably should mention this somewhere that everyone can see it.

Hi...
I am so very new to the world of Rats, tonight actually is the first time I've read anything about these beautiful lil creatures!
I moved in with 2 friend's about 4 mths ago, they have a cat, a rat, a dog & a frog! The frog lives in their room & the cat & dog sleep with them, but because of allergies, the rat sleeps in the lounge! So I would often find myself alone of an evening with this amazing lil girl, I would watch her thru the cage, talk to her, put my hand in & pat her, eventually getting the confidence to bring her out & hold & play with her!
This is where my introduction & love affair with rats begun! My new lil girlfriend's name is "Kiore" (Maori for "lil rodent"). She has a white body with a mousey brown/grey head & neck and a stripe running down her back which has an orange tinge to it!
Before too long Kiore would come running to the edge of the cage when she heard my voice and now spends a couple of hours most evenings in my bed with me running around, snuggling up & dozing in small nooks that she's claimed as her own!
How I stumbled upon this website was that I went looking for info as Kiore has a bad skin irritation, she scratches to the point that her skin bleeds, she ends up with scabs & sores everywhere! They're on her face, her neck & a couple of spots on her body! She has been to the vet about it & has been on antibiotics, however they dont seem to be working! I have been bathing her wounds with warm water & salt to help them heal, but they dont seem to be clearing up! Although she doesnt seem to be scratching that often, I cant imagine she's overly comfortable! I desperatley want to help her!
In the short time I have spent reading this evening I have learnt so much about the care & character of my new lil friend, & some of the things I should not be doing....like sharing my soft drink with her! I have many questions & look forward to learning through this wonderful forum & community that I have found!
Thanks Jen (& Kiore)

Well since I introduced myself and my lil friend Kiore, she has been to the Vet again in Caulfield, he was stumped by her deteriorating skin condition, said he'd never seen anything so bad on a lilove (my new name) b4, he rang a friend in the USA for advice (how cute, Kiore has an overseas specialist), he took another swab of her skin, more antibiotics, more anti inflams, change of kitty litter, change of diet... So fingers crossed here! And to top it off, our lilove has to have a growth removed off her chest this week! My gal is having a rough trot, lots of loving being givin her way!
Thank you for your website, its like a lil support group for the Rat Addicts!

Hi all, I don't have many rats, but I think they're really cool I mostly like black and dove rats I think. I'm not yet sure if I prefer selfs, Berkshires or hoodeds; each has its own appeal. I love the mittens on the black Berkshires, I think I like hooded doves, and there's certainly an appeal to a self black. My rats are very friendly, although that's probably pretty normal. I also have some mice, they're also a lot of fun. I'm interested in genetics and zoology, I have a degree in biological science with majors in both. I'd like to learn more about rats, and (much to the amusement and even ridicule of some of my friends!), I also just like to play with them and generally enjoy them. I've worked with rats in laboratories and animal houses as well as keeping them as pets, so I have a fairly well rounded knowledge of them. I've also kept a range of other animals including a lot of insects, ferrets, birds, many fish and also reptiles (don't worry, I don't plan to talk too much about those!).

Heya! I've been posting in a few threads here, and I figured I should probably go ahead and introduce myself. My name is Rhiannon, I have never had rats before. I have only recently discovered their cuteness as pets and have decided I am going to get some baby girls! Yay! Right now I'm working on a rat mansion, Le Chateaux du Doe, for my two daughters-to-be. It's actually a massive hip-high bird-cage I found at a cheapie shop for $50 and I'm in the process of adding levels and making hammocks and such, so it will be a good home for them. Although I need to find out whether or not ratlings can fit though the bars of a birdcage or if I need to get them a temporary baby home. Outside pets I'm into art of any description. I draw and paint and do a bit of creative writing, and some sculpture. I'm hopeless at sewing, but am hoping that hammock making isn't beyond my skills. Hoping to get to know you all a lot better soon Rhiannon

Hi all I'm Ceara in Adelaide, I'm 22 and a rehab consultant. My interests are clinical psychology, tropical fish keeping and breeding, dogs, cats, and of course, ratties! I've moved recently to a unit that will allow me to have pets and just heard from my landlord that after spending a month thinking about it, she's decided that I can have pet rats I've had the cage and gear for months, just waiting for the opportunity, so now I can find a couple of girls to keep! I grew up having pet rats. My mother is a vet nurse who grew up in Papua New Guinea and has owned pretty well every pet you can think of, including crocodiles, cassowaries, sharks, endangered possum species, and of course, rats. She started with rats when she was conducting experimentation during her studies - she was horrified when she learned that every rat used by the class was to be destroyed after the experimentation, so she volunteered to keep the 30 female lab rats That was well before I was born, but she always loved pet rats. I'm very lucky to have grown up with someone who knows a good deal about pet nutrition and care, and not just for rats. I developed a rat allergy when I hit my teenage years so haven't had pet rats for quite some time, but I have decided now that I have a partner who really wants a pet rat that it would be ethical to have them since I won't be the only one who will be caring for them. So, despite my rat experience, I've been doing as much reading as I possibly can again, to look at what's going on in the rat world at the moment, to research cages and training methods (I used food based rewards and my last rats did quite a few tricks ^_^). Very excited to be here and really looking forwards to getting back into having rats! I'll have to dig up some photos of my last pair, Timmy and Treppie at some point They lived to the ripe old age of 3 1/2 years and I still miss them

Hi, my name is Jenna, I'm 21 and I live about 2 hours south east of Melbourne.
I bred pet mice for bout 10 years when I was younger, and had the odd pet rat that my parents got me, but didn't buy a rat myself until last year when I got my first boy and girl from a pet shop.
I now have 10 adult rats, 3 boys: Lucky (Black/burnt chocolate Hooded), Hughie (Cinnamon/Topaz Agouti berk), Toy Boy (Topaz Hooded) and 7 girls: Serenity (pink eyed cream), Speck (black/burnt chocolate berk), Trixie (black/burnt chocolate self), Izzie (Topaz self), Gingi (Cinnamon/Topaz Agouti berk), Keelie (Champagne Hooded)and Thowra (Blue Ticked Dove Self), and recently had a new litter of 12 born.
Generally I breed to order for my local pet shops and people interested in owning adult rats in my local area, but once my partner and I finish moving into our new house I plan to improve my setup and become a proper rattery. I would love to specialise in breeding blue's and creams, but there haven't been any blue's in my local for years and I haven't been able to find a nice cream male to breed to my cream girl.
We also have various types of fish and two Rottweiler's.
