Hi Kim,
Monkey and Halva were from a pet shop. Because of Halva's cancer, we decided that breeders are a better option so Dot and Dora are from a breeder.
I've probably got the colours wrong, but Dora and Monkey are cinnamon coloured, whereas Dot is a Topaz rat (almost like a light chocolate).
Get well soon.

I should have added that we got Dot and Dora from Brats Tails in Melbourne. Their mum is Orange Mintie.

Hi all, I am Liz. I am a Wildlife Carer and very passionate about animals. I have 8 rats at home plus 11 orphaned baby rats. Currently looking for a foster mum for at least 2 of them. It has been 36 hours since their mums died and theyre still here so i must be doing something right. Feeding every 4 hours. Cheers Liz

Hi Liz, Welcome to the forum. Its a really great place to be and to learn about rats. It was great meeting you today as well. I have to just let everyone know that Liz has done a great job with all the babies who lost their mum's.

Hi there! I have one older sister and a younger brother (both are extremely annoying!!!!) I got my first rat, Tilly in November, 2005 and she died in July 2007 of a tumor. Before she died we bought another little ratty, a black male, Otis. He was just a baby and we felt sorry for him because he was being badly treated in a pet shop. He was only about four or five weeks and they told us he was female but when we got him home it turned out he was a little boy! We kept both rats apart but we hadn't planned for them to live together anyway. In fact we didn't even plan to get any of them! When Tilly died, we were very upset and then in July this year, Otis passed away of what we think was a stroke. He also had breathing trouble and had never been incredibly healthy. Now I have two little boys (who live together), they're cream and white hoodies! So that's everything, I think.

Hi Everyone,
I'm finally looking for new rats. I had two...Pandora and Medea, who both passed away just over 12 months ago. I'm a school teacher and both my girls were frequent visitors o my year 1 and 2 classroom. This time, I thought I'd get two rats as class pets. I have year 6 this year and we're currently reading 'The Rats of NIMH' in class and I thought this might be an appropriate time to introduce them. I have approval for admin, but thought I'd see if anyone else has experience or opinions on this before I actually venture into it. I want to get rats, regardless, it's just a matter of where they'll be homed.

you are so lucky! i'd love to take my rats to work. I think thats good for kids to be exposed to lots of different things at school. Makes it alot more interesting. I wish we had animals in our class room *sigh*

i have occasionally taken my kitten in. she was rescued from a ventilation duct at the school and i ended up adopting her (she's just adorable!) and I have kids who are not so keen on her, and some of the younger kids are downright terrified. it'll be interesting to see their reactions to the rats and how they change after having them in the classroom for an extended period. still trying to work out the details of it though.
