hey there, I'm actually the mum of a 6yo rat owner. I guess I should say a bit about both of us. me - I actually breed parrots, yep I am on the right forum don't worry. I help Noah to look after his pet rat Joshie who at 2 1/2 now is starting to go downhill rapidly. I wasn't a big rat fan until Josh came on the scene but seeing how much good he has done for my son and how smart and affectionate he is I am now a big fan of them. Noah - is 6 yo and is the official owner of Joshie. He has mild autism and has just begun having seizures too. Josh has been a wonderful companion to Noah and fantastic therapy. I cannot recommend them highly enough as pets for children like my son. Soo, the reason for being here is we know Josh has limited time and chances are Noah isn't going to cope too well with his demise. We will be looking at getting another rat, maybe 2 (same sex) fairly shortly by the looks of it. Would really like to get one or two from a breeder this time if possible. I'll ask some questions in the appropriate places. Thanks for having us here.

Hullo,
I'm considering entering the world of fancy rats, but I want to do as much research as possible before actually purchasing a (same-sex) pair. I'm a full-time uni student with a part-time job and poor health, so I also need to make sure I have the money, time and energy to support the little critters. Not to mention, I live at home, and the family is not happy about the prospect of rats! So it may be a while before I buy, but it's best to be prepared.
I visited a run-of-the-mill pet store today to handle some rats as an experiment (I'm allergic to dogs, horses, and to a lesser extent, cats), and I didn't seem to react. I was really taken in by their gorgeous little faces. I like the idea of a pet that will travel around the house with me on my shoulder!
To introduce myself: I'm a writer, student, English tutor with a quirky sense of humour and a big smile. I have a bit lazy cat named Kendra, whom I love, but to whom I'm a bit allergic.
Researching rats has been a GREAT distraction this week: I'm having my tonsils out in two days, and naturally, I'm nervous. Normally, I'm a social butterfly, but the last six months or so have been pretty slow due to those damn tonsils. So when I bid them goodbye, hopefully things will perk up.
Cheers, Fizzlesticks

Hey guys. :] I'm Lakeisha, located in Tamworth NSW. I've owned rats for about 5-6 years, and just recently I've developed the resources to start my own Rattery, which I plan to do so late this year. Just waiting for the right little girls to pop up. My website is here: www.freewebs.com/28thratAt the moment I own 7 rats: Wiggles & Spud (the girls) Kuro, Moose, Wedge & Jigsaw (the boys) Hermit (the lone boy) I love them all to pieces, as I have every rat I've owned, and I'm looking forward to getting into the breeding community. :3

My name is Sam
I'd never really thought about Rats as a pet until I joined another forum, where there seemed to be a heap of rat lovers that were always posting about their rattie friends, so I started to look into them. That was about a year ago.
A year later I am still ratless, but I've decided to become more active in the community so I can gain a better understanding of rats, so that when I do get some, I know exactly want to have/do/feed them.
I'm also hoping I might discover some other people from South Australia who run ratteries, so I can maybe go and check them out.

Gosh I hope to save up the cash soon. Although I'd never buy from a pet store, whenever I walk past I end up going in to play with the rats. I struck some particularly friendly boys today and they were just gorgeous.
Of course, kept on woodchips with nothing to do/play with - no wonder I entertained them!

Hi All, I'm loving these smilies! My name is Clare, and I should introduce you all to my zoo... I have (at the moment!) 1 dog, 5 cats (not all mine) hundreds of fish, 1 snake and my little Jerry, a tan hoodie. I came across this site searching for a vet for my beautiful hooded pair, Barty and Leesy a couple of weeks ago after they seemed to develop a mystery illness. They were both 18mths old. Sadly they both passed last week, leaving me with little Jerry (only 6wks old)... I have a deep respect and love for our furry mates, and just wanted to meet some other nuts out there who enjoy ratty kisses!

Hi, Thanks for providing this forum by the way Myself - I came to own my first rat way back in '95. Im not sure what got me interested in them... i think because i'd had two mice when i was younger, then 3 guinea pigs, a rat seemed the perfect pet inbetween. as is the case with alot of people my first rat is the one i'll always remember not just as my first but as my smartest /well trained rat (Fudge) lol. About my rats - since then I've been the lucky owner of a hand full of other rats. A year after my 1st boy died i acquired to PEW girls, then after they passed i took in a 1 & 1/2 yr old PEW girl (Ms Rattus) that was rescued and taken to a local vets my next baby was a couple of years later - i got a PEW boy (Mr Yattus) when i realised i wasted too much time on my now ex-boyfriend and not enough time on something i really love and since then my love for rats and knowledge about them has just kept on growing in 2005 we went to our first rat show and my mum and i selected two boys, one a black hooded with down under markings (Alice) and a argente hooded with a gorgeous blaze (Bowie). A few months later they acquired a new cage mate a mink hooded (Billy). Since then - a year later i came across my first black berkshire - i was so thrilled because ive never seen one in real life (you'd think i was living under a rock but i wasnt, i guess i was always in the wrong place at the wrong time lol). I couldnt resist him (Wulfy), so he came home with me. He is the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate rat ive ever known. Under a year ago i found out about the Brissy Rat Rescue & Aussie Rat Rescue groups and became a member and even though ive only recently had the opportunity to help a rat in need, i look forward to more opportunities

Greetings Some of you may know me from the AusRFS forums, but I'm Dimmie and I'm from Darwin. I'd like to start breeding at the end of the year, or the beginning of 2009, and I'm here to learn as much as I possibly can!

Hi Everyone i have no ratties at this point in time but am looking at getting some i used to have 2 rats called Adrian and Rookie when i was 15 which was a long time ago now and they used to come everywhere with me i wasn't living at home at the time and they were just the best when i moved from Melbourne back to Sydney when i was pregnant with my daughter the rats were with my dad for about 6 months untill after she was born and i got a place of my own and then my neighbours told my landlord about the rats and i had to find new homes for them which was awful but when you are so young with a baby to look after sometimes things don't always go the way they should but we have our own place so no landlord to worry about and i have missed having rats as company i have 5 children now ranging from not quite 17 through to 7 and we breed Mini Australian Bulldogs i love my dogs but still have always wanted to get some more ratties i think they are fabulous pets for children and adults and think anyone who thinks otherwise just hasn't had the pleaseure of owning one

Hi, I'm Bek. I grew up in rural tasmania, travelled round Europe for a couple years, and I'm now living in Victoria, South of Melbourne with my lovely man. I'm a social worker at a hospital, but want to get into naturopathy so I'm studying this distance ed.
I had loads of mice growing up, and many successful mouse litters were bought up(much to my mothers horror). I've been wanting rats for a while and its been years since i've been able to have pets again (due to travelling etc) so I'm enjoying it immensely. I bought two beautiful chocolated hooded girls from a breeder (Beatrice and Isabella), an agouti at the Caulfield pet expo (Harriet), and Nettie is a cream hooded that I accidently ended up with when I visited a pet shop to buy them all some more food. They are absolutely delightful (Hattie is sleeping in my shirt right now).
Oh well.. thats pretty much it! Nice to see such a friendly forum.
