Hiya Nathan, I cant remember the names of the breeders near me. (was a while ago i looked them up) but i do remember they were located in Cranbourne. Yes sadly Zip and Zooms mother was only 6 weeks or so herself, she is still very tiny as well.

Oh briliant thank you verry much for that. A few options then when im ready to get some boys. I have decided that after my girls pass (or i can afford another cage) then i want to get some boys. I will prolly have to wait till my girls pass for it tho so it wont be for at least a year. When after rats from a breeder how long before you want them/they are born should i show the breeder interest? (Did that make sence?lol)

Hi Christie, I'm Kim from Bozzy Rats Rattery in Cranbourne. First welcome to the forum its a really good place to chat about our rats. Second, most breeders keep a waiting list, so you can contact a breeder at anytime to let them know you are interested. They will then put you on the waiting list and when they have babies that match your interest they will contact you to see if you are still interested. I normally have people on my waiting list for anything from a month to a year. Most of my babies are reserved long before they are even born. Of course dont let that faze you though as every breeder here can tell you that even when you have all the babies reserved some reservations fall through so sometimes there will be babies available even from fully reserved litters. I have people on my list who know only what sex they want and others who have set wants such a colour, marking or coat. Those people are sometimes the ones who end up waiting the longest because I may not have what they want in the litter that I do. Just be sure that you monitor the breeders web site for litters due and every few months send an email just to keep in contact with the breeder as sometimes people do get lost and then miss out, and people shouldnt expect the breeder to be the only one making contact. Its very frustrating for breeders to have a litter and then try to contact people on their list only to find an email address no longer works and they have no way of contacting that person. Also if a breeder doesnt get back to your first email given them a few weeks and then try again. I've had rats for 17 years and so I get a lot of emails about babies and rescues but also I get people just interested in getting some rat information, so some days I can get 20 or 30 emails and of course some may get lost. I like it better when I sometimes have the days with no email at all or maybe just one or two...lol... Anyway I hope this has been helpful for you but also helpful for other people who read this and are interested in contacting a breeder about getting rats but are not sure about when to contact one. Kindest Regards, Kim

Hello Kim, thank you very much for that information. I just looked at your website, i was just wondering when you were going to be breeding again? I think i would like to get some boys off you when the time comes. I know i would like to get some Rex's and if possible a double Rex/patchwork Rex. Colors don't really bother me.

Oops never mind i just found on your website that you'll be back into breading in 2009ish. that will tie in nicely with me i think as my younger girls are about 8 months. Could you please put me down on a waiting list if there is one for when you start back up again? I will be happy to answer any questions you might have about how i care for my rats as well

I'm on Kim's long term waiting list My 3 rats are old age pensioners now and after they pass on I want to travel overseas for at least a year backpacking with my girlfriend and a couple of our mates, so I've asked Kim to put me on her waiting list so she knows that I will be interested in getting a baby from her at some point in the next 2 to 3 years.

Hi hi, I'm Ash I found this forum on my search for a rattie girl to adopt, as a friend for my now lone baby, Lola. I've had rats since I was 12 (I'm now 21), and this little herd is going to be my last for a while, I think, since I want to travel and do all that sort of thing. Lola is almost 2 (or a bit over, not really sure), and doing fantastically. I think I'll have her for a while yet.

Hello. It would be hard decidingnot to have rats anymore, and trying to find another about the same age to keep someone company. How did your search go?

It's a tough decision to make, but I just find it so hard when they die. Maybe I'll have some in the future I've not been able to find a friend for her yet, but I'm doing my best- in the meantime she spends most of her time out of her cage with me, but I know that's not the same as rat company.

Nathan, does that mean your rats get a pension? I have no idea how old any of my rats are. Some of them are 'people' rats, 2 are desexed and nobody bites (unless your finger's been in the peanut butter!) I am so grateful I didn't give in when I got the 30 feeders, they have wonderful personalities. The Mad Ratter's just moved, she's had rats for about 4 years.

Hey Rat Lovers,
My name is Rani, live in Tassie, have 5 kids, am 40! and currently have 3 rats. I am also an RN and work full-time and our house is usually pandemonium.
I have had pet mice for about 18 months and got my first rat in Oct. He was a rescue rat I found at the RSPCA who had no info...was told he was 5 months (going grey around the whiskers and seemed MUCH older to me). I had him desxed about 6 weeks ago. Sadly he started to become sick with ? Myco but also diagnosed with a tumour - after a few trips to the vet and lots of antibiotics he died smooched up on my chest in his favourite ruggy. It has been heartbreaking for me.
I also had two other female rats, Sugar and Chickpea but they have been rehoused with a wonderful girl who adores them. I got them from someone no longer wanting them.
My other rats, Chewie and Lily have been together since babies. Sadly Lily died suddenly on Xmas day this year (made our day so sad). Hence I lost my mind and actually bought 2 female rats 9 weeks old from a hideous pet store to introduce to Lily (who has accepted them and they are all now living together) I also rescued a poor tiny tiny little mouse from the store as well as it couldnt reach it's water and food. Horrible place it is.
So, now I just have Chewie (Hooded) who would be around 18 months, Violetta (9 weeks) dark grey with a white stripe on her belly and white socks and Tansy BB ( 9 weeks sort of a cinnamon/grey hooded).
As the petstore was allowing the boys to hop over the divider they could both be pregant but I am hoping not.
I am looking for two new males at some stage. I prefer resuce rats that need loving homes rather than those from a petstore. I will wait and see....
I love all rodents, I never breed them and desex my boys. They are the best pets I have ever had.
