Hey everyone,
I'm Carmen and I got my rats a month ago, just couldn't resist their adorable faces pleading up to me to bring them home. They're hooded girls, Coco & Cadbury, and they're turning out to be the sweetest but most mischievous little things! Recently had a bout of cold, although the vet said their lungs sound clear, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it won't turn out to be anything serious. Coco's a rounder bub, she's the alpha rat of the 2, while Cadbury loves heights, you just can't keep up with her! Thinking of getting another rat to join the crew from a good and responsible breeder, anyone here have ratlets for sale?

Hi Carmen, Welcome to the forum.
Keep an eye on your girls, if they have the sniffles, often when rats got to new homes they can get a small cold, but hopefully will clear. Other things to watch is the type of bedding or litter you are using, as some of these will cause rats to sneeze and get respritory problems.

Greetings one and all Carmen, Coco and Cadbury sound really sweet ha ha You just knew someone had to say it, right. Rats tend to get colds easily, no matter what you do for them or how well they are looked after. Although as Leeann said sometimes rats do get cold symptoms when they go to a new place to live just because of the change in environment. As for breeders there are a few here so you are sure to find a new baby. In fact there is a fairly new member named Newbie who said she had some babies available at the moment. Anyway welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will like it here, and especially once your post count is up and you can access the rest of the forum.

Can't wait to visit the rest of the site!
Well I'm thinking of changing the names.. Started a thread on that, any suggestions?
It could be that I left some aromatherapy incense near the cage.. would that have sparked it off? Moved them anyhow and hope they get better. Read somewhere that taking them in with you when you bath would help them breathe better cause of the steam.. and echinecea is good for boosting the immune system.

Oh yeah incense smoke could have been a cause of their sneezing. I always try to keep smoke or sprays away from my guys and they are around 2 years old now and still going strong. I replied to your new thread, but will say it here also, I think Cadbury and Coco are perfect names.

Hello All Im glad to have finally found an Australian forum. Im 27 and a uni student studing nursing. Im at the computer alot and wanted pet rats to keep me company. I have recently purchased my first 2 girls this weekend. I have loved the rexes for awhile and when I saw one at a pet store I had to have her. She is 6-7 weeks old and a dove self rex, she has ruby eyes. Her name is Izzy. When I started looking for more information I realised I needed to get her a friend. So I went back to the pet store and purchased her sister who is a brown hooded, her name is Coco. Pictures are coming.
After reading more and more I realised pet store rats might not always be the best. They seem to have good temperments and must have been handled alot as they are friendly. This is such a learning experience for me, but Im enjoying it all the same.
Im looking forward to chatting with other rat lovers....

Greetings Hales. Yes its always better to get a rat from a breeder who handles their babies a lot, but some pet shop rats can still be really good. By brown hooded do you mean Agouti {wild rat colour} Some blacks look brown {chocolate} when they are young. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Nathan
I have had a look at alot of pictures and im pretty sure Coco is not agouti as she is more of a chocolate brown, rather than a grey brown. The pet store owner actually called her the little black one, so you are probably right, once she moults at around 10-12 weeks?? she may darken. Will put some pics up so ppl can help me out. Might have to change the name then, not 100% on it just yet.

Hi, My name is Angie. I live in Werribee, west of Melbourne. I have a son Lachlan 11, and a daughter Kasey 5. Lachlan bought himself a rat from the pet shop, on Saturday with his birthday money. He has been wanting a rat for a while. He named her Amy. She is soo cute. I have fallen for her in a big way. She is white with a beige hood and GT stripe. She is the sweetest little baby girl. She is very friendly. She is not scared of us. Only if we pick her up. This forum is great, thank you, Angie

Hi Geez, she's gorgeous! I recommend getting her a friend, your son can't compare to a little friend's grooming and wrestling.

Welcome Angie, Lachlan and Kasey.
I agree with Newbie, because rats are sociable animals and would be happier with a friend.
Look at getting another rat to be with Amy, but make sure that the new rat is of the SAME sex. As rats can breed from as young as 4 to 5 weeks of age.
