Hi, I've just joined and this looks like a good place to start posting messages. I'm a uni student from Melbourne, studying Zoology- hoping to one day study veterinary. I love all animals and would love to have a pair of rats. I joined this forum to learn more about them and maybe get some hints about who a good breeder is. That's about all. Look forward to chatting with everyone. -Katie.

Hello . My name is Karina and I'm from South Australia. I currently have two big boy rats that I love with all my heart! Their names are Sheikh and Fable . I have been a long term rat owner/lover, having had rats as pets from a very young age! I was lucky enough to have a mum who was a big animal lover and thought rats were the best ever pets. Unfortunately poor Mum developed a severe allergy to them and almost went blind because of it.. but she loved our rats so much that she let us keep them anyway and observed their beauty from afar . We even ended up doing a bit of breeding, which was amazing and the highlight of my younger years.. but I must admit it was fairly irresponsible by todays standards (we were just crossing petstore rats with no knowledge of their history or genetics other than that they made healthy, cute babies. This was upwards of ten years ago, there wasn't any information around and we just didn't know any better :/.) I'd like to reenter the rat breeding world and have been studying up on rat genetics like mad! I'm gaining a very good knowledge of it all and cant wait to put it into practice someday . Look forward to talking to you all

Hello My name is Cassie and I live in South Australia. I have never owned a rat before, but have recently become interested in them and so am trying to do as much research as possible to see if they would be a suitable pet for me. I have two giant breed dogs and also belong to an Australian dog forum, which is where I saw some beautiful photos of other members' rats and heard their stories, and that is what inspired me to look into them further. I am looking for a breeder in SA, if anyone knows of one I would be very appreciative. Thanks, look forward to learning more from you all! Cassie

Hi
I cant remember if I posted in here or not, have lost track.
My name is Chantel and Im 31. I only recently got two rats for my 9 year old son who was interested in them. I was a bit iffy about it but since then I have fallen in love with them and want to get my own cage and to have some of my own.
The two rats we have are called Henry and Pepper, both are pet shop rats which I drove all over Brisbane to find. They are still pretty much babies and are still very wary of humans.
I joined the forum because I am only new to the rats as pet thing and want to expand my knowledge, learn about, share and get some great ideas.

Hi im Alysha. I'm a veterinary nurse by career but presently taking time to have a baby of my very own and to persue my old hobby of rats and mice . I've owned mice since 2002 and rats since 2004. I've pretty much been breeding since i got my first mice LOL! My stud is known as Allys Rats & Mice and am based in Campbelltown, which is in NSW. I'm presently owned by 6 ratties, 8 mousies, 2 ferrets, 1 dog & 5 kitty cats! I'm a little out there and whacky at times... but you learn to love it LOL! I've been president of a rat and mouse club for a few months now and am enjoying that, it keeps me busy!! Well if you have any questions/enquiries dont hesitate to drop me a line

Hi guys, name's May and I'm currently residing in South Australia. (:
I'll be picking up a little 5 week old male on Tuesday with a slightly deformed tail, he also happens to be the runt of the litter which is basically what sealed the deal. I have a thing for those who are less fortunate. My little guy will also be getting a brother to go along with, so yay!
The person who I'll be getting him from will be selling the rest of her rats to the petshop, which is what nudged me toward rescuing the little guy. Both of us (the breeder and I) just could not bear the idea of this poor little one shoved in a small cage without human contact.
He does not have a name yet, although I am playing with the idea of naming him Fry... but am waiting till I actually meet the little guy in person first. (:
So yeah, just wanted to say hi and meet some friendly rat-lovers around Australia. Sorry if this intro is a little long. Heh.

Well... from what I've been told, at a little under half his tail there is an indentation which makes the tail look like it'll drop off anytime. But apparently the end of the tail is still pink, which shows that he is still getting blood through. Is there anyway I could help 'heal' his little tail? Or would it remain that way for life? Will definitely take some pictures of the tail when he's home.

Hi there,
Another South Aussie joining the ranks here, I'm Jo. I just joined here last night and I am reading and browsing for as much information as I can get on keeping rats as pets. We are hoping to buy one or two for my daughter who just turned 11, and want to make sure we have a good grasp on what we are doing before we bring any rats into our home. We went to the petstore yesterday just to look and she was rather smitten when the rat she was able to hold came and gave her two whiskery kisses on her nose. We would prefer to buy from a breeder than a pet store though so if anyone knows of an SA breeder that would be great.

Welcome Jo I would defiantly recommend getting at least 2 rats. They are incredibility social animals and need to have a ratty friend for them to be happy and healthy. You have come to the right place for information we have people here who have owned rats for many many years and know a lot. If you cant find what your after feel free to ask as many questions as you need.

Hi all. I was told about this forum by a member of another forum I subscribe to. I used to keep pet rats when I was much younger and yesterday we bought my sons a pet rat each. We got a black and white hooded rex male and a black, or possibly dark brown, normal male with white belly and socks. As with other pets we own I always look for an informative forum so I can gather all the info required and ask questions. Now its time to search through all the info here. Cheers Phil

Heya all.
I'm Kris, a neuroscience student hailing from Melbourne.
I've had rats several years ago, but am now considering adopting more. I absolutely love rats and the only bad thing is their short lifespans, but I do miss having them in my life.
