My boys are pretty quiet at night, unless they get bored of their toys (which have to be changed every two days to avoid boredom). My girls on the other hand are the noisiest little things I've ever known. My babies for once are mercifully quiet... they're also the friendliest babies I've had in almost a year which is even better

On the bright side, if there is a particular newspaper article you dont like, put the page in their cage and wait till nightfall and you'll hear it being destroyed... I'm listening to some quality shredding noises right now lol must be my bed time!

Hi everyone, I am a new member , YES my 4 male rats are very noisy, more so at night/early mornings and especially the older one, they live in our hallway outside my daughters bedroom. I certainly dont need an alarm clock! ;D

Rats can be super noisy!!! I think I've pretty much gotten used to sharing my room with them, but some nights they're terrible - running around the cage. pushing things of shelves - so not good when you've had a long day and need sleep, but I lvoe them all the same

I'm a light sleeper as well. I'd wake up at least a few times a night only to hear ratty wrestling or Pixie going hyper on her wheel. Honestly, you'd think it'd "lift off" she goes that fast. At first it kept me awake but now I'm used to it. I just smile when I hear them going about their ratty business and go straight back to sleep. If you do have them in your room and just can't get used to it , invest in some earplugs. They really help!!

I find it interesting that the majority of owners find their rats noisy only because of the nocturnal rat adventures...
Hear hear to all the late night fisty cuffs, midnight renovations, tap tap taps of the water bottle and practicing their leaping techniques from highest points shaking the entire cage.
But as far as the noises they make themselves...
Other than the bruxing (which is hardly loud) they are the quietest animals....
Any time a rat is shown in film or television they are making a constant squeaking noise.
And we all know that a squeak is just crying uncle in a fight (and only worse if its all out war).
Tv has the majority believe that rats are constantly squeaking their way through life.
THAT annoys me.
So yes. noisy in the sense that they like to thump and bump their way through the night.. but generally? quietest animals ive ever owned. 2 rats are nothing like the noise 2 guinea pigs generate (or 20 for that matter. i do love those idiot cavies)

But as far as the noises they make themselves... Other than the bruxing (which is hardly loud) they are the quietest animals.... For those people who have to keep their rats in their bedrooms or close to their bedrooms, all those nocturnal rat adventures do make rats noisy critters... As for the late night fisty cuffs that you mention, rats do make noise when they fight, they squeak and chatter and it can be very loud when a rat is in a fight and those are noises the rat makes and not noises from something it is doing as when a water bottle is being used. The original question also wasn't about how noisy the rats are in the vocal noise they make but the noise in general that you can expect including bottle drinking, furniture rearranging and so forth. So in that way yes they are noisy at night and if they are in your room you may find it hard to sleep.

Gothic Shadows, i completely aggree. Reading back over my post i realised i wasn't making as much sense as i had hoped. I aggree, rats at night are noisy, I don't keep them in my bedroom for that reason. And trust me, i know they're quite vocal when they fight (i have teenage boys who spend the majority of their time battling it out) Sorry about any confusion there. hehehe indeed i wouldnt reccommend keeping your rats in the bedroom unless you sleep like the dead.

Yes they are noisy little buggars, but I'd much rather listen to them in the next room, rather than listen to a dog barking outside.

I'd agree with most of the previous posts. I've only had mine sleep in my bedroom a couple of times when there were people staying over who would be where I usually keep them. Definitely noisy little critters at night. It's not too bad occasionally, but not recommended for long term.

I'm a light sleeper and frequently hear my ratties playing and bouncing about through the night, and tearing up their paper etc. There's no way I could sleep with them in the same room, they are at the opposite end of the house to my bedroom and can still wake me up.

I think my rats have made me a heavy sleeper! They make so much noise bouncing around all night with the wheels going, paper being shredded, banging around the cage... Funny thing is now I have trouble sleeping without the noise
