Sorry to clog up the forum with my threads, but this is such a different topic to my last I thought I'd put it here: As nocturnal animals, how noisy are rats at night? I'm a relatively light sleeper and a chronic insomniac. Would they keep me awake if I kept them in my room, or would it just be a rustling/crunching?

Heh im guessing some might be quiter than others but i know i cant sleep with my girls in my room. They run around like crazy clanging there bowels around, jumping from level to level, and squawking from there play fights. Then there is the bleb bleb bleb from there drink bottles. Ill stick with them living the lounge room thanks lol.

I can't sleep with rats(or any animal except my cat) in my room. And I'm a heavy sleeper! They are so noisy, the clunking from the water bottle is the most annoying noise ever. Tossing their cat ball bell things around is also annoying.

I think it depends on the individual. I have some girls that find great joy in tearing their cardboard (lines the bottom of the cage) right in half, while I'm sleeping. Others will jump and hop about...anything to keep me awake. Then there's my angel men who could sleep in the bed with me (and have :x) who don't make a peep. Rats are nocturnal though. Only the rare rat will let you sleep, from my experience. xD

Ah, all right. Sounds like, when I get some, they might have to live elsewhere in the house. It's looking more and more like I can't get them until I move out! I'm going to spend this year saving up. (My only job during the year is tutoring a few high schoolers!)
Thanks

I kept my rats in the hall way just outside my bedroom door. even though i kept the door shut, i could still hear the odd noise! so i ended up shutting them away in my bathroom for the night... and that fixed that problem.

Yep, I keep my rats in the bathroom and they STILL wake me up through the night. The bathroom is just across the hall from me though and I do have trouble sleeping myself.
Anyhow, I think you have seen from all the answers here that keeping them in your bedroom is probably a bad idea :-)

I've had 9 rats living in my room at one stage and I got used to the noise. The only thing that bothered me was when they were using stainless steel bowls, they used to throw it around the cage.

i love when they find the noisiest thing to eat just as your dozing off to sleep or if you have newspaper or cardboard and they decide to do some "ratovating", i listen to them for a minute and smile to myself and go to sleep with thoughts of my happy ratties lol

Rats are noisy little critters at night, sometimes i wake up and it sounds like a million of them are running around my house, but i love to lay and listen to them, running around, wrestling each other, just being little ratty bugs. My fiance is a light sleeper and i find myself having to go out and trying to encourage them to be quiet. I couldn't have them in my bedroom. They would keep him up all night.

wow brendan you must have very noisy cats and dogs then lol. The only time i slept with my rat cage in the room was when i was babysitting my mum's 2 dogs for a week. The rats certainly were WAY more noisy than the dogs. When i did have 2 cats they were also not as noisy as the rattys. But while they are noisy yes, if you slept with it every night you would soon get used to it just like with anything else.
