Hi, I'm Tracy, my son Jack is about to get his first rat/s. I have no experience with rats at all so we are doing as much research as we can. It's very exciting though, the more I read the more I can see that they make very good pets!

Absolutely! Rats make the most wonderful pets I'm an animal person and my mum's a vet nurse, so I have had a really wide variety of different pets growing up, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, fish, various birds, sheep, etc. Rats are my favourite in terms of ease of keeping and personality. Unlike dogs and cats, I don't need to worry about coming home and being covered with pet hair or being scratched. I don't have to give them attention the instant I walk in the door. I play with my rats for at least an hour a day, but I can do it more on my terms. I don't have to force myself out when it's freezing cold or boiling hot because I need to take the dog for a walk. Rats have a lot more personality than any of the other rodents I've kept. They really remind me of dogs in personality! And whilst it's not a plus for me, for parents, I think the short life span of rats isn't such a bad thing - no being left with a pet dog or cat for years after the children have left home because they can't keep them at uni or where they're renting

Hi everyone, I'm from Melbourne and as of today I have three ratty girls. Mocha is my old girl who I've had for two and a half years. Her sister Java died in last week's heat wave so today I went out and bought her some company. My new little bubs are Amy G and Dala. They have yet to meet their soon to be cage mate, just doing the quarantine/settling in wait. Other than rats the only other pet I have is an unnamed goldfish. I would love a menagerie but I live in an apartment so no more pets for me.

Hey Tigergrrrl, Glad I'm not the only one living in an apartment. My boyfriend and I share our little one bedroom unit with 5 ratties, and an aquarium with tropical fish. We lost most of our fish during the heat wave Luckily though, all of our rats are doing fine! We gave them ice packs, wet them down regularly, put wet towels over parts of their cages, had a fan on, fed them frozen food, and generally did everything we could - they spent a lot of time sleeping underneath the ice packs! I'm glad that we only had two days of really hot temperatures in my bedroom. It was just for the two days where our portable air con turned off because it kept overheating. The rest of the time, things have been ok

Hi my name is Alissa, Im from Tasmania, I have 2 male rats and 5 female rats. I love rats so MUCH! They are just absolutely gorgeous and sweet and affectionate. I am planning on breeding rats after I become registered so that other people can enjoy the company and friendship that rats have to offer and so that I can breed quality rats with great temperament, conformation and variations in markings and colour. Any info that I can get will be greatly appreciated all though I know the basics. Thanks all, Talk soon, Alissa

Hi, My name is Amanda and I want to get some rats. I have loved them for ages and had to nag my partner for ages so I could get some, he thinks they are dirty!! I tell him he is dirtier! LOL
I live with my partner and our 2 foxie dogs, 6 moggie cats, soon to be 7... I am getting a Sphynx ( The bald cat ) very soon, and our 4 Hermit crabs... As you can tell, I LOVE animals. I want to live on a farm so I can have more. My family think I am crazy, but as Long as I am happy.. who cares!!!
Anyway, we went to the pet expo a few weeks ago and I decided that I AM going to get rats, I fell in love with a little girl I was giving hugs too, even tho she peed on me!! Hehehe I am currently trying to find them a suitable cage to live in.

Hi, I'm Carolyn. I live in Melbourne.
No rats yet, but two daughters (5 and 7) who reeeeeally want a pet they can love and cuddle and train and smooch.
I thought that pet rats would be a good idea. So, being a good mum... I'm doing my research and finding out every thing I can.
I grew up with many pets (not all at the same time) including mice, rabbits, ducks, fish, dogs, terripans, axolotlyls, skinks, geckos, water dragons, guinea pigs, blue tongues. But I have never had a rat.
I am still working out what sort of cage to make/buy and will be also looking to buy two young rats when we are ready. I get the feeling that this will be a great forum to help me.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum First I have to say my husband was born in South Africa but moved to Australia with his family when he was 10 years old. Second I have to say you are going to make some people here very jealous as we dont have Siamese, Burmese or Dumbo eared rats here in Australia and many people would love to have those types.
