Hi Guys very new to rats and was just wondering can 'African Soft Furred Rats' be found amongst aussie breeders?
The reason i ention ASF ratties is my cousin in the USA raves about how cool they are intelligence wise and decreased odour even when multiple males are housed.

I really strongly doubt it. I've never heard of them before and had to go look up what they were - and from what I am reading they reproduce like well, rats, so I would have thought I would have by now.
And theres no way to import them legally.
But I've been wrong before (often) so maybe I'm wrong this time.
They sure do look interesting though don't they?

They are really cute, but I've never heard of Australian breeders of them.
I doubt that we would even be allowed to import them.
Sorry.

No to the best of my knowledge they are not in Australia and i doubt if we could import them . As it is we can not even import any ratties from over seas at all . most on this forum would be interested in hairless and myself would like to own siamese but we will not have them at present . In Queensland we can not even keep hopping mice although southern states do allow hopping mice to be kept . Barry

In QLD i'd consider it lucky if they ever let us have ferrets or rabbits, never mind an imported animal!!!
I've considered moving to NSW just so I can legally own a rabbit!

Yes we live in backward state . Think of all the cost of maintaining the rabbit proof fence . It works because not many rabbits are captured hopping down the Queen street mall . Plenty on the Darling Downs and i have personally seen a colony at Sarina in North Queensland . It would be a complete waste of time trying to convince the government to lift the ban on rabbits . The pet industry have tried recently without success. Barry

Yes I know. I did some internet research on it earlier in the year. Not to mention people already own illegal rodents in QLD and no one says anything. I would rather they control it and regulate it than risk people owning them 'illegally'. They better not try and put a limit on how many (or make illegal) rats, guinea pigs or mice we can own though..!!

OMG! I just did a google for these critters, out of curiosity, and stumbled onto an ASF forum... WHERE THERE'S A WHOLE SECTION DEDICATED TO THE SALE OF SNAKES THAT FEED ON THESE RATS! It's just HORRIFIC. Even someone who's got a heap of rats for sale, and bothers to say "they don't bite, they're really friendly, and perfect size for a python". Why do they bother saying how friendly they are?! I'm disgusted, sorry guys. I know I probably shouldn't bring such horrible subjects up, but I was just shocked as daylight. Still, they are VERY cute! They look a little like a cross between our rats and a dunnart of some sort. The ears are too cute! If anyone does want to see a photo, have a look at THIS PAGE, which still talks about the dreaded pythons, so don't necessarily read the text, but the photos are really great. asy

I thought they looked like a rat with a mouse face. Very cute. I did read somewhere though, maybe on that same site, that they are prone to being nippy.

Cows, sheep and pigs are cute to, yet we eat them Snakes and other animals gotta eat to, its unfortunate that they eat rattys but as long as they arnt live when fed its not going to bother me (the rats being live that is).

That is the bit that gets me....when the critter they are using as food is alive. I think that is just mean. I can't say I am really keen on thinking about where my dinner comes from either but at least it is already past caring once I get to it. Live meals are just gross. Lil.xx
