A quick question. What height should I make, I suppose, cardboard bunding, to stop free ranging rats from making it into places where I don't want them? A not so quick explaination. My PC sits on the floor, in a corner (Shaddup, I find it comfortable, I don't care about ergnomics!) and has lots of tasty PVC covered cables that carry fun voltages. I was thinking of just cardboarding the whole corner off, because my mouse and keyboard are wireless. All that will leave exposed is the ethernet cable for a short length. I was thinking about a foot high. Will that be enough? I also have to ratproof the storage corner, so I could find them again.

I cant give many tips about rat proofing rooms, I've never been game to try, we have a table and spare room that the rats can free range in where they are safely out of the way of electronics.
I think the only tip I can give you is never let your guard down lol. Even when you think you have something 100% rat proofed, they will try to prove you wrong and sneak a way in or find something to chew that they shouldnt, but that's their nature hehe, i think trial and error works best with these guys, depends on the ratty's personality - most of my rats have been pretty good with chewing, only chewing things in their house, the odd blanket, one of my shirts and nuts in the shell.

What height should I make, I suppose, cardboard bunding, to stop free ranging rats from making it into places where I don't want them? I would also like to know the answer to this. I'm in a similar situation - with the added fun of having a few holes in the walls where I'm pretty sure an adventurous rat could escape to our neighbour's house. So yeah, walls would be ideal. gav, if only the ethernet cable were chewable then that might be ok... the current in them shouldn't be powerful enough to kill a rat. But probably powerful enough to stop him from chewing on the cable you will have to replace it with

Make it about 2 and a half or three feet high. A rat can easily jump one foot in the air, trust me!

i28.tinypic.com/1zyret.jpgWe did some experimenting, if you fold the pizza flaps up (on the top side only) they just can't jump it - but can cling on with their forepaws in an extremely entertaining fashion.
