This might sound weird, but is there any way to tell if they aren't getting enough of something in their diet? If they're lacking?
Are they very picky on what they eat? Is there anything that you should never feed them that we can eat?

There are one or two lists on this forum of what is safe and what isnt to feed them. Have a browse around when you're given full access if you cant see any in new member part You could find some rats will be picky and some will eat anything (even your clothes and furniture lol), but there are plenty of things you can feed them so they should be right nutritional wise

As long as you provide them with a varied and balanced diet, they should do fine. I gave my rats lab blocks, as well as my home made cereal and seed mix, and for dinner they would get table scraps like veggies, pasta, and in the morning a bit of fruit

my rats are quite spoilt... I feed them a variety of fresh fruit and vege as well as the traditional rat seed mixes and lab blocks,.. some of their favourite things to eat are: avacado, banana, apple, carrot, peas, corn, cooked rice and pasta, puffed wheat, nutrigrain, cheerios, nutella, to name a few, they also love soy milk for a treat, and a chicken drumstick bone to chew on... someone told me they can have that egg and biscuit you mix with water :-/that you give to birds? has anyone else feed that to their rats?..

...I feed it to my birds, lol. Well I don't really see much wrong with feeding it to rats.... But it's formulated mostly for chicks and young birds, so it's high in protein especially and energy, minerals etc (there's not much wrong with the minerals though, lol) so if you feel like feeding it to your rats then i'd reccomend it as only in small quantities, as you don't want your ratties getting fat! It's called Egg and Biscuit and it's available in most pet stores, just look in the bird section. ^.^

My pregnant females and my older rats get Egg and Biscuit mix.
Its great for pregnant females as they need the extra protien.
To be honest I've never really bothered with watching how much protien was in my rats diets and I've never had any health issues because of too much.

I feed my girls a variation of Suebee's mix. It includes dry pasta, weetbix, rolled oats, puffed wheat and rice, pumpkin + sunflower seeds, broken up corn cakes, plus Supercoat Lite and Mature dog food. They also get supplemented with fresh fruit and veg every night, as well as treats including - yoghurt, chicken bones, baby food, boiled/scrambled egg and maybe a little of what I'm having for dinner. I think they're spoilt! ;D

There are vegetarian dog foods...? lol, well I just learnt something new! Do they have any different nutrient values than non-vegetarian dog food?

I make my own mix. Its made up of lab blocks, bird seed, dog/cat food, various cereals, pasta......and i think thats it! It changes with what is on special that week and what i have at home at the time. 2-3 times a week they get baby food as well. They also get treats of whatever i am eating at the time.......they especially love pancakes ETA: They do get veggies but that is mainly through the baby food as i dont have time to cook, they will get frozen veggies once it heats up though.

You can buy raw veggies in packets at coles and safeway (woolworths) in the fresh fruit and veg section. I buy them and chuck it in for my rats all the time, no cooking at all just open the packets, they love it.

Is it good for them to have them frozen all the time though?
Would it be fine for majority of the time (2 weeks straight) and then cooked for one week? (i work 2 weeks on 1 off)
They have been having cooked or at least defrosted veggies this week, but i usually just switch to baby food when i work.
