I'm sure I've seen one once in a pet shop. Not sure of the title though it was probably just called "Rats" or something like that. Keep an eye out when you go to get food for your rattties (if you have some already, if not just when your walking past a store) hopefully you'll find it.

Do you have a library or even a mobile library that you have access to?
Try ringing them first and if it is a mobile library then ask for the rat reference books to be put into truck, you can then choose one or two when they get to town.
Also do google searches, you will come up with plenty of sites to maybe print out some of the info but please bear in mind that alot of rat related sites are overseas ones and some of what they talk about does not apply to us here in Australia.
Basic info like cleaning, feeding, handling will be the same but some of the health issues and colors are not here in Aus.

if your child would like a good story with a bit of adventure then i can suggest a book called, "Rescue Ferrets at Sea", it has rats in it and its a charming little story that kids absolutely love, when i take my ferrets to the child care centre i usually take it with me and read it to them as they pass the bear my ferret and gizmo the rat around,
Before any one growls at me, bear and gizmo are the best of friends and actually curl up together, usually with Gizmo sleeping on Bears back, I would never put them in harms way and they are supervised at all times.
