Hi I am new to this and am looking for some help and advice. I live in Perth and do not have any access to breeders over here where i could purchase fancy strain rats. I am interested in rexes, capped and blazed. We do not seem to have then here in perth but correct me if i am wrong or direct me to how i would be able to find them.

Hi there Most ppl have rats freighted over to perth from the eastern states. Im sure someone who does this can give you some more information on pricing etc, cause i think the more ppl that do it the cheaper it is. Also just need to talk to some breeders on here too. Cheers

Shipping costs to Perth can be anything from $100 to $260. So its probably a good idea to find a couple of other people in Perth who are wanting to get some rats shipped over as well and then split the shipping costs. I know a number of breeders who have stopped shipping though because of cost, even though the buyer pays the shipping costs, but many people dont live close to the airpots, so travel time and messing around with parking and travel cages and shipping people have put so many breeders off shipping. Also the actual shipping price can not always be given until the rats are taken, weighed and priced at the shipping place. So it means that the breeders more often than not has to pay for the shipping themselves and then get the cost from the buy after, not all buyers like the cost and not all buyers end up paying but keep the rats. I live about 2 hours from the airport and when I do ship I use AAE (Australian Air Express) The problem with them is that even though they are really good at their job, sometimes you can get there and they wont accept the travel cage you have, they also cant give you an actual correct price until they have weighed the travel cage with the rats in it. So I now tell people that I am willing to ship but they have to send me $300 towards shipping cost - $20 goes towards petrol money to get to the airport, the rest goes towards travel cage costs and shipping cost. What doesnt get used will be given back to them. Not many people write back after I tell them that. But unfortunately I have had a number of people get their rats and not pay for the shipping fee. As a single income family, those people who didnt pay have made it impossible for me to ship without getting money up front.

Hi! I live in Perth too, and unfortunately we do not have any registered breeders. If you are looking to talk to more perth people, I'm a member of PRRR's forum (perth rat rescue and rehab) and you may find some help on there. Good luck

Thanks everyone for your replies! Wow that is expensive, lol. I am actually more worried about the rats making it safely over. I don't mind spending the money but if it freaks them out or they die i wouldn't be able to forgive myself for being so selfish.
That is typical that other people have ruined it for us, i can't believe people would take the rats after all that work and not pay up. well no i can believe it my mum breeds and shows dogs and used to let people pay off puppies kinda like a layby but a couple took the puppy and never paid so now she asks for a deposit and money upfront when the puppy is old enough to go their new home.
I guess ideally it would be great to find someone in perth already offering what i am after so i will have to investigate the PRRR avenue too. I have taken on old unwated rats a number of times with the intention of finding them a pernament loving home, which usually ends up becoming my joint lol much to my partners dismay!!! I want to be able to show people in Perth that rats are awesome but the only interest i have had have been through pet stores and that kinda freaks me out.
Any more info would be great, i am still keen on the rexes, capped and blazed but maybe it would be worth my while getting them all at the same time rather than a strain at a time so they have travelling buddies and make the money worth it. I'm willing to pay upfront i jst won't tell my partbner or i will get a lecture on trust blah blah blah

You'd get a lecture on trust when you pay upfront? Oh dear >.<
I know what you mean about a lack of rat community. I"m in the same boat here in Adelaide. We have one rattery that I know of (Namen Rat and Mouse) but I've never got a reply when I wrote an email so he might not be breeding at the moment!
This has meant that all of my rats have came from pet shops, mostly because I'm a wimp and have a bad case of GGMR (Gotta Get More Rats) and find it hard to resist them in pet shops.

Hi Ceara, Yeah i know that feeling i gotta get more rats too!! I have contacted a couple of breeders too but it seems hard to get a reply. Let me know if you have any luck with any particular breeder I am on a waiting list with bratstails rattery but i have absolutely no idea how long i could be waiting i have been in contact with the breeder since December but don't know how long the wait could be because most breeders only breed a couple of times a year. I always feel sorry for the adult rats at pet stores because they aren't "small and cute" anymore so i purchase them knowing they usually get tumors quite quickly and die It's quite heart breaking.

Hey Sam, good luck! I am on a few interstate waiting lists but I'll be able to tell you for sure about the shipping stuff from experiences if it ever does go ahead (last email wasn't replied to). If/when I do get a nice baby or two from interstate, I will be planning on breeding. If you want rats in probably a year or so, I'll be all over shipping them to you - and from Adelaide, it would probably be a little cheaper than the Eastern states I have just started breeding but will be keeping the rats from my current litter - both parents came from pet shops and I want to be able to make sure the babies health and temperaments are as good as the parents. If they are though, I am planning on breeding from one of the babies, probably with a rat from a breeder (this will be the next litter I'm planning). So yeah... in 6 months to a year, I'll have babies. Good luck in finding some!
