Hey there guys, I am just trying to figure out if my new boy is a berkshire or a varieberk
Is someone able to give me a definition/judging standard?

Hi cat, There is a defination in the standards section when you get full access to the forum. But basically for a perfect standard a berkshire has a stright line dividing the top colour from the belly white. Where as a Varieberk the white and colour mix to give a dappled look on the side.

Ok my next question is a hard one to phrase ... Is it a recognised and ummm, chosen marking? Or is it just when the berkshire doesn't quite turn out the way you hoped

That is a hard question because different states and different clubs / societies / associations have different standards. Some recognise certain markings, coats & colours where as others dont. So Varieberk may be a recognised marking with one group but not even considered as a marking with another. To get something standardized you need to be able to breed it over a number of generations and prove that it can be reproduced time after time.

I know of one that doesn't recognise coat types becuase we have so few!

Ok, interesting and thanks guys. I quite like the marking myself ... it looks like he jumped in a saucer of milk I hope that all goes well and I am able to breed from him when the time is right.
