Heh yeah they do get under the fabric on the bottom level. But they don't really chew it that much. I give them plenty of fleece scraps around the cage that they can drag around as they please. I find that those bits get chewed up a lot but i don't mind that. But i figure that when they chew the fabric liners ill make hammocks out of them and then when the hammocks are chewed ill just take all the cotton (from sewing it) out and just throw the scraps in the cage then when they are all holey ill throw it out or use it as filling in another type of hammock. All in all it works out cheaper and looks a tone nicer than litter all over the cage. Also to help keep it looking clean Lioness and i bought a dust buster, so twice a day ill just vac up the block dust and any stray poops. Looks nice and keeps the smell down.

Yes I have the FK's as well, but I have about 15 rats in each one .. which is probably why the fabric and hammocks dont last long .. I'm guessing with less rats it would last longer

Yeah that could be it, specially if they are all chewers. At the moment there are 6 boys in the top. But only one or 2 of them actually chew so I'm lucky there. Hopefully the rest don't start though lol. With my girls none of them chewed at all until Zoom got older then i couldn't have anything at all hanging in the cage cause she would decimate them in 5 mins.

I have given up buying expensive hammocks for my ratties, I just string up pieces of fabric because they chew them to pieces within days anyway! Sigh... But at least the I can choose whatever fabric designs I want!

What naughty little chewers!! Does anyone have PVC piping in their cage (this kind used for pipes)? My friend uses it for her rats, and she has made a crazy series of twists and bends - but the rats chew the ends of this too - I am a little worried about using it in case they are able to get a big bit off and choke or something!

I don't use it but i do want to give it a try. Looks like it will be fun for them. There really isn't any need to worry about them chocking on it i don't think. I really doubt they will actually eat it, and when they chew on something its bitten off in such small pieces that it shouldn't be an issue. From what i have read rats really only start to choke on things that are soft and sticky.

I use PVC pipe in my cages, they love to sleep in it ... One thing I will suggest is that when using it, make sure you uses lengths that make it easy to clean and make sure you can get into it to clean.. As the insides get very dirty if left uncleaned .. the oils from their hair and skin, any discharge from sneezing or coughing as well will build up in the pipe .. so the pipes do become very grotty .. I normally put a couple of small holes in the pipe and then put wire through the holes and hang the pipe from the roof or sides of the cage...

I would be guessing that to clean out the pipes just use a baby bottle brush type thing yeah?

Well it depends on the size of the pipe .. I use pipe that has an opening size the same as that of a CD or bigger, meaning a CD would fit into the pipe opening.
Male rats can grow to be 800 grams or more, so you want to make sure the rats fit in plus if you get 2 going in from different ends you dont want them to be to squished when they meet in the middle... lol ...
So when I clean mine to use paper towel with a vinager and water mix.
But I guess a bottle brush would work as well.

Ive got two cages going atm, soon to be three (to house my eldest and youngest boy together). This cage is currently housing 4 boys, its a Marchioro Ferretville, it cost me $200, but RRP is $440, I got it at wholesale cos I worked at the place I got it from This is the girls cage, its a grotto style cage that I was given with them (excuse the lack of toys, I need to buy some hooks so I can hang some more stuff)

That first cage looks nice, tho WOW $440 for it. I certainly wouldn't pay that much for that cage. Good thing you got it at half price.

Can the position of the shelves be moved around as well? I like the fact that its got a few quarter shelves but don't like how the full shelf is right up the top.
