Suspend belief of anything you read or hear. If it is accompanied by evidence, be prepared to question the evidence. Research, cross-reference, and cross-reference again. Be a sceptic but keep an open mind. This will help you weed out the misinformation from the facts.
Hope this helps.

You know I never thought of a mirror for a rat, but I can't imagine it would really make up for a friend, because rats love cuddling so much!
I think one of my best bits of advice would be, GO TO THE VET if your rat is sneezing. Too many people don't bother taking little ones to the vets and then they end up with chronic respiratory problems and it's so unfair! My best advice would be that just because they are small doesn't make them cheap, infact to see an exotics specialist can be MORE EXPENSIVE then a general practioner, so be prepared! I get very frustrated when people say they won't treat their rats illness because "it onyl cost me $10" or whatever!
But yeah, I assume anyone passionate enough to post on a ratty forum would not be in that catagory!

Oh that shits me as well. It doesn't matter how much your pet cost you, it still needs vet care. Going by that logic i should never take my cat into the vet because i didn't pay a thing for her.
Also i think good newbie advice would be to make sure you get a decent sized cage right off the bat. You don't want to get a cage that is to small, or just right for your first cage because you will more than likely want to get yourself a new ratty or 2 before your first guys/girls pass away to make it easier on all rattys involved. Also get/make a small travel/hospital cage as well. It can also double as a fantastic place to put your guys while cleaning out their main cage weekly.

My best advice would be listen and take on board what people with years of rat experience have to say ...
Also make sure that the advice you get about certain rat types comes from people who have actually had experience with the types they are talking about.
*I know a few people - experienced rat breeders - who diss certain rat types, say they are sickly, deformed, not long lived, and so on, yet they have either only ever had one rat of that type or have never had a rat of that type in their life.*
Read as much as possible but dont believe everything you read as many myths are out there on the internet.
As questions, even if you are worried that they may seem like silly questions, most rat owners will probably have had the same questions as you do when they were first starting out.
