My girls are using that exact cage now. It's ok.. but don't expect to have much space for tumbling around after putting in foodbowls, nesting box, wheel, tubing, hammocks.. it's a good basic cage but I would recommend maximum 2 females only (due to their size being smaller than males).

I have one of these cages, (currently not used).
I removed the very bottom wire base, as I didn't want my gang walking on wire all the time. Only thing you have to watch, is they may chew the plastic tray thats in the bottom and make a get out hole. As the tray is a low sided one too, you may find a bit more mess on the floor, from them pushing the litter/shavings around. Also got some off cuts of lino and cut to fit upper shelves and on the very top.
I had 5 girls in this one, they had plenty of room, didn't have a wheel cause none of mine used one.
I did like the 2 doors, as it meant ease of adding or removing thngs from the cage. Wire cages are great for hanging things like hammocks too. My girls learnt that treats were given from the top door only and would all come to that door.
Just a few pros and cons, but if it will suit your needs, then go for it, do look a bit longer though if you have the time, as there is alot of diffent ones around.

thanks guys for your input. I will keep looking around to find what will best suit me for cleaning, etc...and the ratties for space, etc. I want to get them into something new and bigger, hopefully within the next month or two, depending on how big and fast they grow. ta hales

hales: My girls just got their first Wodent Wheel.. you can get them from www.dapper.com.au in the products section. I've been researching about a wheel ie. whether they will use it/need one/which one's best and this has been recommended in a lot of places. Plus there's a higher chance of girl rats using a wheel so there's no harm trying if you've got $30 to spare. Leeann: I'm looking for a bigger cage for my girls, you mentioned there're plenty of other types of cages elsewhere, short of ebay, where can I find other decent ratty cages? I only know of very few pet stores that are accessible to me, would be great if I can get to more to expand my rat-cage search area.

Oh wow, I was just looking at this cage today. But from what I'm reading it wouldn't be suitable for boys? Are there any other cages you can suggest ?

I looked at those cages as well. I like the fact they have a stand and they seem stronger and more sturdier (if thats a word). Im starting to think, I need to get something stronger and bigger, so if anyone has ideas about converting big bird cages, that would be good. Cheers Hayley

Hi Hales,
Look like a great cage, the only thing that would worry me is where the hammock is placed, if you put it there and someone falls out they have a long way to fall. You can cover the wire easy enough if you wanted to so thats not a problem.

oh yeah safety first. I would take the bottom litter tray wire cover out and attach it in the middle of the cage, then just have the smaller levels higher and lower placed. It said that one has 1.2cm spacing so can't complain there. See how i go, still not happy with anything yet, cage wise. Cheers hayley

I brought this cage haley and I love it! I have the shelves positioned differently though. The bottom wire shelf can not be put in the cage unless you have clips or something as there re no hooks on it, so no obvious way of hanging it. I made my own shelf out of laminated timber to put in there. I have hammocks mostly over the shelves so there isn't a long way to fall. It has happened on occasion but thankfully both my boys are still safe. I totally recommend the cage though, except for littlies! They need to be at least 8 weeks old before you put them in there, otherwise they can squeeze out the bars, lol. One of mine was doing that so I had to tape up some parts of the cage! Rach
