Thanks guys! I'm really happy with it. My brother did an awesome job putting it together for me. It's so much easier to look after than the wire cages, and they have so much fun. I gave it a good clean out today, and rearranged all their toys. The poor girls looked so indignant when I put them back in - they'd spent all week arranging everything how they liked it, peeing on their toys, and stashing things. I had to bribe them with Cheerios.

hi me and my partner built our own cage as-well. Best thing we ever did. The large rat cages at our stores (which are still rather small!) were around $150 and didnt want to spend that sort of money!! i found my friends bought two of these cages and actually cut a square hole in the bars and made tunnels to each cage for more space. So we werent gonna do that lol. What we did is we got a square container with the clip down sides and made the rest of the cage sit on top of that was birdwire (which is great to see through). We used heavier wire to make an outline for the doors and levels and then covered levels with material then add hammocks & toys. I paid $15 for the container and $20 for the wire and had the heavier type wire already. Our cage stood 1m30cm or so and then as we added rats and we wanted to give them more room we just simply cut a square hole in the side and made tunnel and joined that onto another one of our home made cages Rat paradise. Heres some piccies. When my cage was first done. I was still putting in hammocks at this point. Luna jumped into a hammock that sits at the top of the cage. Bottom area of the cage The doors. Home made. Heavier wire for the ouline. (we normally dont have the food there but the two rats in the pic were from Eclipses litter, about 4wks old). Rat cage after it had just been cleaned. Putting the hammocks back in. Its fun re-arranging it all The add on cage, tunnel feature. they like to sleep in the tunnel.

I've actually being refining the design of my cage. The next version will have a drawer down the bottom for storage and it'll be easier to put together. We have a machine at work that can cut all the pieces out, then they just need to be screwed together. I'm trying to talk my mum into letting me make a few more for people I've had ask me.

Wow that cage is fabulous.
Pet shops are not very helpful when it comes to pet cages and I have noticed many cages marketed as rat cages don't look very big

Wow I saw the cage that has been built and it's amazing...
I'm actually wondering where people get their cages from? Most of the cages I've seen are way too small and I don't want to break up our rattie community, they get along too well. I've checked ebay and I've found some great cages, but I'm concerned about the wire spacing gap (2.5cm) and whether it will be okay. Does anyone have any suggestions of sites/people who sell cages etc? I'm not very crafty, my partner is but since he isn't into our ratties, I'm not sure he would help me!
